BARSENTO’S SANTA
MARIA ABBEY
BARSENTO’S SANTA MARIA ABBEY
Humble architecture for spiritual richness.
The ancient Barsento’s Santa Maria Abbey is an actual jewel for the Apulian architectonic heritage.
As a matter of fact, because of its age and features, it represents an uncommon example of a well-preserved basilica-shaped Romanic-style building.
Its story traces back to 591, when the hard-working hands of Sant’Equizio monks built it on the top of the hill overlooking Pirro’s canal, as a result of Pope Gregorio Magno’s will.
Today, the simple white-painted walls, the small bell tower – which still works – and the timeless atmosphere of the rugged church make it the perfect setting for sacred eternal-love promises.
