MASSERIA

Time has stopped here.
Barsentum is a fortified Medieval hamlet surrounded by a green and peaceful oasis in Noci and Putignano’s charming countryside. The masseria, which is surrounded by dry-stone fortifications and walls, strikes for its simple and authentic 16th-century architecture. The interior rooms, which were renewed according to the original artistic standards, are framed by pointed arches and round ones. The dining rooms as well as the recesses and big stone chimneys make each and every part of it authentic. Massive green areas prevail on the territory, while nature unveils its perfection through the olive trees’ silver glares and the warm colours characterizing the Mediterranean maquis. On the background, typical Apulian trullis telling a thousand-year old cultural history can be spotted. Visiting Barsentum is just like traveling back in time. In the hamlet, Le Iame – that is, the ancient 6th-century settlement built as Barsentum’s Santa Maria Abbey’s jazzo – is brought back to life.

THROUGHOUT THE CENTURIES

Barsento’s origins were discovered thanks to Pietro Gioia.
In his monograph Conferenze Istoriche, which was published in 1839, he talks about the origins of Noci and its development. He traces back to the 6th century, when Pope S. Gregorio Magno chose this site for the presence of a natural reservoir – an authentic bowl-shaped cenote – to build Santa Maria Abbey’s jazzo for Sant’Equizio monks.
Later, Barsento’s favourable location persuaded the Normans to choose it as the first settlement of what then became the town of Noci. The original castle was built here but, very soon, Tulliano’s army, who was Taranto’s emperor, sacked the fortification and left no trace of it. Throughout the centuries, several patrician families and landowners lived in Barsento and their lives intertwined and mingled with the typical stones and its astonishing nature. This place was left abandoned for several years until 1980, when Barsentum was created. It was Simone family which refurbished the hamlet with passion and dedication, respecting its original architecture. Today, Barsentum’s doors are open for those who choose this magical place to celebrate life and love.
